School meetings can include many confusing words. Here are simple meanings — bring this page to your next meeting if it helps.
IEP
A written plan for a student who qualifies for special education services.
Evaluation
Testing that helps the school understand your child's strengths and needs.
504 Plan
A plan for accommodations when a child has a disability but may not need special education.
Speech Therapy
Support for language, communication, understanding, or speaking.
OT
Occupational therapy. It may support handwriting, sensory needs, or daily school tasks.
Neuropsych
A detailed evaluation that looks at learning, attention, memory, language, and emotions.
Family Therapy
Therapy that helps family members communicate, understand each other, and solve problems together.
Advocate
A person who can help a family understand rights and prepare for school meetings.
Tip. If you hear a word you do not know, it is always okay to say: "Can you explain that in plain language and give me an example?"
