What to Say

Sample words parents can use.

Families should not have to figure out the language alone. These scripts can be copied, practiced, or used in meetings. Use the Copy button to save them for an email.

To ask for a school meeting
"I am worried about my child's progress. I would like to meet to understand what support is happening and what the next steps should be."
To ask about an evaluation
"I would like to understand whether my child needs an evaluation. Can you explain what the school is seeing and what areas might need to be tested?"
When you do not understand something
"I want to understand this clearly. Can you explain it in simpler language and give me an example?"
To ask what is working
"What support is my child receiving right now? How do we know if it is helping? When will we check progress again?"

You can also write it down. Bring these words on paper or your phone. Read them aloud if it helps. Asking the same question more than once is okay — your child's team should be able to answer until you understand.
